Salt Air and Canyon Dust: Caring for Your Car in Pacific Palisades

Run a clean finger across your hood after a foggy week and you will pick it up. Left alone, that salt holds moisture against the clear coat and speeds up oxidation. The second is canyon dust. Homes tucked into Temescal and the surrounding hillsides catch a steady drift of dry grit, and after windy days a layer of fine ash and soot can settle on everything outdoors. That grit is abrasive. When someone wipes it off with a dry towel, it acts like sandpaper and puts light swirl marks into the finish.

The mistake we see most often is dry wiping. If your car is coated in fine ash or dust after a windy stretch, please do not run a dry rag over it. You will drag those particles across the paint and scratch it. The safe method is to lift the grit off with plenty of lubrication before anything touches the surface. We do a thorough pre-rinse, a foam soak to loosen the film, then a gentle hand wash with clean mitts that get rinsed constantly. For bonded salt and stubborn fallout we follow with a clay bar treatment, which pulls contaminants out of the clear coat that washing alone leaves behind. Only after the paint is truly clean do we seal it.

Inland, a good wax is a nice finishing touch. Near the water it is a working layer of protection. A fresh coat of wax or sealant gives salt and moisture something to sit on other than your clear coat, and it makes the next wash far easier because grime releases instead of clinging.
